Underwriting and approval resume (insurance)

Underwriting finishes days after the applicant last looked — the agent reopens the thread the moment the decision lands: you're approved, here's your premium, shall we activate your cover?

What it does

Insurance applications stall on steps the applicant can't speed up: underwriting review, a medical-records check, document verification. The applicant submits, waits, and attention drifts; by the time a decision email arrives the intent that got them to apply has cooled, and an approved policy sits unbound. The agent listens for the back-office completion event and reopens the same conversation the moment the decision arrives — with the outcome, the premium, the context of where they left off, and the activation step ready — so the applicant is carried from an approval to a bound, active policy while they still care, instead of being left to restart from a cold notice.

How it works

  1. 1
Trigger. an asynchronous underwriting or verification step completes and fires an event — underwriting_decision_ready, medical_review_complete, documents_verified — carrying the decision and, where approved, the offered premium and terms.
  2. 2
Decision. the agent matches the event to the paused application and the applicant's place in the journey, recalls what was discussed and what was left open, checks consent and channel preferences, and selects the right framing for the outcome — a clean approval, an approval with a loaded premium or an exclusion to explain, or a referral that needs a human. The resume message passes a quality judge before it sends.
  3. 3
Action. a push, chat, email, or SMS that continues the same thread rather than opening a cold one: the decision in plain language, the premium and what it covers, and the concrete next step — confirm the terms and activate cover. Any premium payment runs through the insurer's own secure payment step.
  4. 4
Follow-through. if binding needs something more (a signature, a first premium, a clarification on a loaded term) the agent explains exactly what and walks it through; replies continue the journey on-channel; the outcome and stated context write back to the policy admin and CRM; an adverse, rated, or sensitive decision is handled within policy with handoff to a licensed adviser where required; and if the applicant already activated cover on their own, the stale resume is cancelled before it sends.
Example
AgentGood news — your application came back approved a few minutes ago. Your monthly premium is set, and it covers everything we discussed plus the add-on you asked about. The last step is confirming the terms and activating your cover. Want to pick up where we left off?
CustomerIt's a bit higher than the first estimate — why?
AgentUnderwriting applied a small loading based on one item in your medical history, and I can show you exactly which and what it means for the cover. The protection itself is unchanged. Would you like me to walk through the breakdown before you decide whether to activate?

Configuration

How the agent is wired for this use case.

Triggera system event from the underwriting, claims, or document-verification back office on async-step completion — underwriting_decision_ready, medical_review_complete, documents_verified — with the decision, premium, and terms attached.
Tools & actions
  • Underwriting / policy admin system · read the decision, the offered premium, any loadings or exclusions, and the applicant's saved position in the journey; bind the policy and activate cover on confirmation.
  • CRM / application record · recall the paused conversation and prior discussion, log the resume, the explanation given, and the bound-or-lapsed outcome.
  • Knowledge base · retrieve approved, plain-language explanations of premium loadings, exclusions, cooling-off rights, and the activation and disclosure requirements.
  • Payment provider · route the first premium to the insurer's secure payment step; no card data passes through the conversation.
  • Messaging channel · reopen the existing thread on push, chat, email, or SMS.
Autonomythe resume message and a clean-approval explanation run unattended behind the judge; binding the policy, taking the first premium, and explaining a loaded or adverse underwriting decision are confirmation / handoff policy classes — confirmed with the applicant before execution and routed to a licensed adviser where suitability or a declined/rated decision requires it.
Channelspush · chat · email · sms
Escalationa declined or heavily rated decision, a coverage or suitability question beyond approved language, a complaint, or any vulnerability cue hands off to a licensed adviser with the full application context attached.

What you need

The inputs this use case runs on. Your channels stay yours; the agent supplies the judgment.

Signals

webhooks from underwriting, medical-review, and document-verification systems on async-step completion, carrying the decision, premium, and terms.

Data

the paused application history and the applicant's position in the journey, the per-outcome next-step map (approved, rated, referred, declined), policy terms and disclosures, consent and channel preferences.

Guardrails

judge review of every proactive message; policy-controlled handling of adverse, rated, or sensitive decisions with handoff to a licensed adviser where required; no regulated suitability advice from the agent; first premium via secure hand-off only, never card data in conversation; frequency caps; stale-resume cancellation on self-activation; the insurer keeps owning the send channels.

Metrics it moves

  • application-completionup, because approvals stop stranding applicants between the back office and a bound policy.
  • conversion-rateup, approved applicants bind while the intent that got them through underwriting is still warm.
  • activation-rateup, cover is activated in the reopened thread instead of restarting from a cold decision notice.
