Conversational insurance application and underwriting intake

Buying cover means facing a long form full of underwriting questions you don't understand — so a lot of people who wanted the policy give up halfway.

What it does

Insurance applications ask for a lot before they give anything back: medical and risk disclosures, rating factors, declarations, documents — usually as one long static form that a motivated buyer starts and abandons when a question confuses them or the effort outweighs the moment. Every drop is someone who wanted the cover. The agent replaces the form with a conversation: it asks one underwriting question at a time, explains in plain language why each disclosure matters and how it affects the quote, captures the documents it needs as it goes, and keeps the applicant moving toward a bound policy. It gathers what underwriting requires without ever making the underwriting decision itself.

How it works

  1. 1
Trigger. an applicant opens the application or taps "apply"; intake starts as a conversation in chat, in-app, or on voice rather than rendering a long questionnaire.
  2. 2
Decision. the agent sequences questions from the line's validated underwriting question set, skips branches the answers have already ruled out, explains each risk or health disclosure as it asks, and recalls anything already known so nothing is asked twice. A judge gates every message; the underwriting outcome is never decided by the agent.
  3. 3
Action. a question-by-question dialogue where doubts get answered in place — what a disclosure means, why a rating factor is asked, what the premium reflects — with documents captured inline (a licence, a valuation, a medical declaration) as each is needed.
  4. 4
Follow-through. a completed intake writes back as a structured application to the policy admin system and routes to underwriting for the bind or quote decision; clear-cut declines or referrals are explained kindly and handed to a licensed underwriter; applicants who drift away mid-flow are picked up by the quote-abandonment recovery play.
Example
AgentA few questions about the home you're insuring. Is the property your main residence, or is it let to tenants?
CustomerIt's let out. Why does that change anything?
AgentGood question — a let property carries different risks than one you live in, so it's rated separately and may need a specific landlord policy. I'll note it and adjust what we quote. Next, I'll need a quick detail on the roof construction — I'll explain why as we go.

Configuration

How the agent is wired for this use case.

Triggeran application_started or "apply" action on a quote or policy page; intake opens as a conversation rather than a static form.
Tools & actions
  • Policy admin system · sequence the line-of-business underwriting question set and write back the completed structured application
  • Rating/quote engine · recompute the indicative premium as disclosures arrive and explain what each factor reflects
  • Document/media capture service · collect the licence, valuation, medical declaration, or other evidence inline as each is needed
  • Customer memory · recall details already provided so no disclosure is asked twice across sessions or channels
  • Knowledge base · retrieve plain-language explanations of disclosures, exclusions, and coverage terms to answer doubts in place
Autonomythe intake conversation, document capture, and premium explanation run unattended under judge gating; the agent never makes the underwriting, bind, decline, or pricing decision — that is a licensed-underwriter policy class, and the structured application is routed to underwriting for the outcome.
Channelschat · in-app · voice
Escalationa disclosure that triggers a referral or decline, a complex or non-standard risk, a complaint, or any request for the bind/decline or final premium decision routes to a licensed underwriter with the captured application attached.

What you need

The inputs this use case runs on. Your channels stay yours; the agent supplies the judgment.

Signals

application_started events and per-question answer events, plus the entry points (web, in-app, voice) where an application can begin.

Data

the line-of-business underwriting question set and rating logic, document requirements, consent state, anything already known about the applicant.

Guardrails

the agent stays inside the validated underwriting question set and gives no medical, legal, or coverage advice beyond approved explanations; it never decides underwriting, pricing, or binding — referrals and declines go to a licensed underwriter; explicit consent before any follow-up; sensitive health and risk data handled to policy; every disclosure captured logged for audit; judge review of every message.

Metrics it moves

  • application-completionup: a conversation that explains each underwriting disclosure in place loses far fewer applicants than a long static form.
  • intake-completionup: structured disclosures and documents arrive complete and in order, so fewer applications stall waiting on a missing answer.
  • conversion-rateup: by carrying an applicant from "apply" through underwriting intake to a bound policy in one continuous conversation.
