Spend and tier upgrade nudge (gaming)

A player keeps buying the same small coin pack and bouncing off the locked content — the agent offers the tier that actually matches how they already play.

What it does

Engaged players quietly outgrow the pack they started on. They top up in small amounts again and again, hit the limits of their current tier, and keep tapping into premium content they can see but not access. Each of those moments is a player telling you they would pay more for a better fit, and most economies answer with a generic store banner that fires the same offer at everyone. The agent reads the player's own behavior — top-up frequency, content gating, session intensity — and opens a contextual upgrade conversation at the moment the play pattern makes the case, matching ARPU to demonstrated engagement instead of guessing.

How it works

  1. 1
Trigger. a behavioral signal fires — repeated small top-ups in a short window, a player hitting a hard pack limit, or sustained dwell on gated premium content.
  2. 2
Decision. the agent weighs the signal against the player's memory (current tier, what they spend on, offers already declined, session rhythm) and judges whether a better-value pack, a battle-pass, or a VIP tier genuinely fits; the quality judge gates the message so it only goes out when the upgrade case is real, not whenever a counter ticks over.
  3. 3
Action. a short in-app card, push, or chat message that names the pattern and offers the matched tier with its value spelled out ("you have topped up three times this week — the weekly pass costs less than two of those and unlocks the content you keep hitting").
  4. 4
Follow-through. the response is written back to memory and sets a cool-down; if the player's spend drops back under the threshold before the message sends, the stale nudge is cancelled. The purchase itself completes through the game's own store and secure payment step. Lift is measured against a holdout so the economy sees the real incremental spend.
Example
AgentYou have grabbed the small coin pack three times this run — and you have been eyeing the season content that is locked behind the pass. The battle-pass costs about the same as those three packs together and unlocks all of it. Want a quick look?
PlayerDoes it carry over if I miss a few days?
AgentIt does — the pass runs the whole season and your progress holds even on days you do not log in. Here is the side-by-side; if it fits, the store handles checkout in one step.

Configuration

How the agent is wired for this use case.

Triggera topup_repeated, pack_limit_hit, or gated_content_dwell event from the game's economy/telemetry stream.
Tools & actions
  • Game telemetry stream · read top-up frequency, limit-hit and content-gating events
  • Player profile store · read current tier, spend history, memory of prior offers and declines
  • Recommendation engine · pick the matched pack, battle-pass, or VIP tier and compose the value comparison
  • In-app messaging / push surface · deliver the contextual upgrade card on the player's active channel
  • In-game store · hand off to the player's checkout and secure payment step (the agent never takes payment)
Autonomyjudge-gated and unattended for surfacing the offer; the purchase is a money-moving step that completes only through the game's own store and hosted payment hand-off, never inside the conversation.

What you need

The inputs this use case runs on. Your channels stay yours; the agent supplies the judgment.

Signals

top-up/purchase events, pack-limit and content-gating events, session-intensity and dwell telemetry

Data

current tier and entitlements, per-player spend history, consent state, memory of prior upgrade conversations and declines

Guardrails

judge gating on every unprompted nudge; responsible-spend and suspected-minor caps that suppress the offer; decline cool-downs and frequency caps; the studio keeps owning the send channels and the store/payment step; holdout measurement so the claimed lift is proven

Metrics it moves

  • arpuup, as players who have outgrown their pack move to the tier that matches how they already play
  • conversion-rateup on upgrades, because the offer arrives with the player's own evidence at the moment of felt friction
  • attach-rateup, as battle-pass and VIP-tier take-up grows from the engaged base instead of a blanket store banner
