Habit-streak break recovery
The streak your user spent months building just broke, and the next thing they feel is that they failed — reach them before that turns into deleting the app.
What it does
A long streak is the single most emotionally loaded thing a habit app holds, and the moment it breaks is the moment many users decide the whole thing was pointless and walk away. Most apps mark the chain back to zero and say nothing, which reads as a punishment exactly when the user is most fragile. The agent treats the break as the retention event it is: it reaches out right after the chain snaps, reframes one missed day as a normal part of any real habit rather than a failure, offers a streak-freeze if the app has one, and gets the user re-started the same day. The difference between a one-day slip and a churned user is whether anyone shows up in that window.
How it works
- 1Trigger. a streak-break signal fires from the app — a meaningful chain (a habit, a routine, a daily log) resets after a missed day, and the user has not already restarted on their own.
- 2Decision. the agent reads the user's memory — how long the streak was, what the habit meant to them, what got in the way last time they wobbled — and weighs whether a recovery touch genuinely helps now. Every unprompted message is judge-gated for tone, with quiet hours and frequency caps applied; a guilt-flavored or scolding draft is suppressed.
- 3Action. a short, warm message on the channel the user answers — the reset reframed without blame, a streak-freeze offered if one is available, and a one-tap path back into today's habit so restarting is easier than disengaging.
- 4Follow-through. the reply writes back to memory so the next wobble is handled with context, the pending touch is cancelled the instant the user restarts on their own, and impact is measured against a holdout so the saved-after-break lift is the lift actually observed.
Configuration
How the agent is wired for this use case.
streak_broken event from the app backend — a meaningful streak resets and no self-initiated restart has happened within the window.- App backend · read streak state, streak length, habit type, and whether a freeze/skip token is available
- Persistent memory · recall what the habit meant to the user and what disrupted them before, to shape a non-generic reframe
- Quality judge · gate every unprompted message for supportive, blame-free tone before it sends
- Messaging channel · deliver the recovery touch and a one-tap restart on the user's preferred surface
- Token/forgiveness service · apply a streak-freeze on the user's confirmation where the app offers one
What you need
The inputs this use case runs on. Your channels stay yours; the agent supplies the judgment.
Signals
streak-break events, streak length and habit type, freeze/skip-token availability, self-initiated restart events, user replies
Data
the user's habit history and what the streak represented, what disrupted them before, channel preference and consent, quiet hours, persistent cross-session memory
Guardrails
wellness-coaching only with no clinical advice; distress and red-flag detection with human escalation; judge gating for blame-free tone on every unprompted message; consent, quiet hours, and frequency caps; stale-touch cancellation on self-restart; holdout measurement; the client keeps owning the send channels
Metrics it moves
- churndown, because the break that usually ends the relationship gets a same-day recovery touch instead of silence
- reactivation-rateup, as users who broke a streak restart the habit rather than abandoning it after the reset
- dau-mauup, since the one-tap restart turns a lost day into a kept daily habit, measured against the holdout
