Onboarding drop-off rescue (fintech)

A new customer freezes on a KYC step at the last screen of account opening — a doubt about fees, a photo that won't pass — and instead of closing the tab, they get an answer in place.

What it does

People who reach a fintech sign-up have already decided to try — then a verification step or a money question stops them cold: what does the ID check actually involve, will this account cost me a monthly fee, am I even eligible for this loan, why won't my document upload go through. In financial onboarding these doubts are sharper than in any consumer flow, and most people never ask them out loud — they abandon, and the regulated-acquisition spend that brought them is gone. The agent lives inside the account-opening and verification flow: it reads exactly which step stalled, answers the fee, eligibility, or KYC doubt in plain language, fixes the stuck upload in place, and guides the customer through to a funded, activated account.

How it works

  1. 1
Trigger. behavioral signals inside the onboarding flow — a stalled KYC field, a document upload that failed or repeated, long idle time on the fee-disclosure or eligibility screen, repeated back-and-forth between verification steps.
  2. 2
Decision. the agent reads the exact step the customer is stuck on plus session and memory context (the product applied for, prior questions), and a quality judge clears the proactive open so a confident applicant sailing through is never interrupted. It stays inside approved language — it explains a step, it does not give regulated financial advice.
  3. 3
Action. a chat opens in-app at that step with a message about that step, not a generic greeting: it clarifies what the ID check is for, re-runs a failed upload with a clearer-photo prompt, explains the account fee or the eligibility rule, and walks the customer through the remaining fields to submission.
  4. 4
Follow-through. a completed sign-up hands into activation with what was learned (the doubt raised, the product chosen) written to persistent memory; if the customer self-resolves or finishes another way, any queued nudge is cancelled rather than sent stale; and any eligibility, affordability, or suitability question hands off to a human.
Example
AgentThis step is the identity check — almost always it's the photo, not your details. The back of your card got cropped and the lighting was a little low. Want to retake it? Nothing you've entered is lost and I'll stay right here.
CustomerBefore I bother — does this account charge a monthly fee? That's the only thing making me hesitate.
AgentNo monthly fee on the plan you're opening; the only charges are the per-transaction ones listed on the fees page, and I can pull those up. Shall I take you back to finish the verification once you've had a look?

Configuration

How the agent is wired for this use case.

Triggerbehavioral signals from the onboarding flow — a kyc_step_stalled, a document_upload_failed, repeated form errors on an eligibility or fee-acknowledgement field, or idle-timeout on a verification screen.
Tools & actions
  • Onboarding / origination platform · read the current step, the failure reason, and saved progress; re-trigger the identity or document-upload step in place.
  • Knowledge base · retrieve approved, plain-language explanations of the KYC requirement, the fee schedule, the eligibility rule, and the regulatory disclosures.
  • CRM / customer record · log the stall, the intervention, and the funded-or-lapsed outcome; suppress applicants who completed or opted out.
  • Identity / verification service · report the document-check status back into the conversation so the agent can guide a clean retry.
  • Messaging channel · run the conversation in the in-app or chat widget on the onboarding screen.
Autonomystep explanations, upload retries, and in-flow guidance run unattended under judge gating; any eligibility, affordability, or product-suitability determination is a regulated-advice class the agent never performs and routes to a human.

Escalationan eligibility, affordability, or suitability question beyond approved language, a suspected-fraud signal, a hard verification failure, or any vulnerability cue hands off to a human with the onboarding context attached.
